GEOFF MULLEN- untitled [BONGO CLOSET, PT. 3]
BONGO CLOSET (TYPE, 2010)
Another excellent Type release from a couple years back. Though there is indeed a 10-minute track of processed, reversed bongos to justify the slightly head-scratching album title, I’m especially partial to this brief, melancholy passage of guitar and synth. Even within a relatively short piece like this, there’s attention to dynamic and textural shifts that are palpable.
The fact that Mullen can generate music like this but often pushes himself in numerous directions is always commendable—he’s been working in a few different modes recently, including facets of indeterminacy in his solo work and collaborating with other Boston-area artists like Eli Keszler. His newest release is a tape on Ekhein, an excerpt of which can be heard here.
